Magnetosphere
The confines of the Earth's magnetic field, modified by the influence of the solar wind. On the sunlit side, the magnetosphere is nearly hemispherical with a radius ~10 Earth radii under quiet conditions and ~6 Earth radii during solar storms. Opposite the sunlit side, the magnetosphere extends in a 'tail' of several hundred Earth radii.
