Chronic and very high blood pressure (> 240/120) that often comes on suddenly and quickly which causes organ damage, especially in the eyes, kidneys, brain and lungs. Malignant hypertension is a medical emergency. The disorder affects about 1% of patients with high blood pressure. It is more common in younger adults, especially African-American men. Malignant hypertension is often accompanied by swelling of the optic disk.
