Material anchor
A physical artefact which both represents and serves as a physical reminder/symbol of a particular integration network. A material anchor can also be employed in order to prompt for the (re-)construction of a given integration network. Rituals, for instance, often employ material anchors. In the case of Holy Communion, a ritual in various Christian denominations, the bread and the wine that are consumed by worshippers are material anchors which both embody and facilitate the conceptual integration (the union between the human and the divine). Similarly, the wedding ring in the western marriage ritual is a material anchor. The ring both embodies the conceptual integration, representing an unbroken link, and also has a performative function as part of a ritual: the act of placing the ring (which embodies an unbroken link) on the betrothed's finger serves, in part, to join two individuals in matrimony.
