Mercator Projection

A Mercator projection is a type of map rectangular (cylindrical projection) in which the true compass direction remain intact (latitude and longitude intersect at right angles), but distorted areas (for example, the polar look much larger than they really are). Mercator projection is useful for navigation at sea. Geradus Mercator projection cylinder found these to be used in navigation in 1569.
