A type of monastic order in the Middle Ages with a contingent of knights, whose main purpose was to support and fight in the Crusades. Major military religious orders included: the Knights Templar, the Hospitallers, the Teutonic Knights, and the Knights of St. Lazarus. There were also numerous local and national orders.
