Nuclear pore complex (NPC)

The site on the nuclear membrane through which proteins are transported into, and RNA is transported out of the cell nucleus. The NPC includes proteins that recognise nuclear localization sequences (NLSs), amino acid sequences that mark proteins destined for import into the nucleus, and the GTP hydrolysis-dependent mechanism that drives transport. The complex of the transported protein and the components of the NPC which bind it are termed the nuclear transport complex (NTC).
