On the record

The official record of what goes on in the courtroom. Whenever you are in the courtroom and the judge is present, you should assume that you are on the record and being recorded. If the judge makes a ruling "on the record," it means he or she made the decision orally in the courtroom, which is just as permanent, final and binding as if it were written.
