The selection of behaviour during the lifetime of an individual organism; the modification of operant behaviour by its consequences (see especially DIFFERENTIAL REINFORCEMENT and SHAPING). This type of selection was once called operant or instrumental conditioning. Those who work in this research area are sometimes called behaviour analysts.
