Genus of 13 species of shrubby or tree-like, perennial succulents from mostly arid regions of Namibia, S. Africa, and Madagascar. Many have swollen, irregularly shaped caudices and very thick, thorny stems. Diurnal, salverform to funnel- or bell-shaped flowers are produced usually in terminal clusters, in summer. Pachypodium is unusual plant. Unfortunatelly, it is not an easy plant to grow - it need bright light and moist air. Keep away from direct sun and droughts.
