Partial discharge

A partial discharge is an electric discharge that only partially bridges the insulation betwen conductors when the voltage stress exceeds a critical value. Partial discharges may, or may not, occur adjacent to a conductor. Partial discharge is often referred to as corona but the term corona is preferably reserved for localised discharges in cases around a conductor, bare or insulated, remote from any other solid insulation.
