Particle orientation

The process by which acicular particles are rotated so that their longest dimensions tend to lie parallel to one another.

Orientation takes place in magnetic tape by a combination of the sheer force applied during the coating process and the application of a magnetic field to the coating while it is still fluid. Particle orientation increases the residual flux density and hence the output of a tape and improves performance in several other ways.
