A polymer of bacterial cell walls that exhibits considerable species variation in structure. It is generally composed of a heterodisaccharide attached to a peptide; the carbohydrate moieties of neighbouring subunits are cross-linked, and the peptides of neighbouring subunits are also cross-linked.
