permanent wilting point (PWP)

Soil water content at which plants can no longer get water from the soil and will wilt and die. When soil water contents fall below this level, irreversible wilting and crop damage occurs. Soil suctions at PWP are generally greater than 15 bars. PWP is expressed as the ratio of the volume of water, at the permanent wilting point, to the volume of the soil sampled.
