Primary producer

An autotrophic organism that makes complex organic compounds from inorganic compounds through the process of photosynthesis or chemosynthesis. For example, phytoplankton synthesise sugars (organic compounds) from carbon dioxide and water(inorganic compounds) using energy from the sun. Phytoplankton is one example of a marine primary producer. See also autotroph, food chain.
