Promession is a form of body disposal invented by Swedish biologist Susanne Wiigh-Mäsak. Bodies are frozen in liquid nitrogen making them very brittle, and then vibrated for several hours to turn them into a fine powder. Non-degradable items (e.g. artificial body parts) are removed, then the remains are put into a biodegradable casket and buried at a shallow level.

The advantage of this method is that it promotes aerobic decomposition, allowing the remains to degrade into soil in a similar method to composting. It saves space compared to regular burial and is far more environmentally friendly than cremation.

The process is currently unlawful, but interest in the process has been expressed by dozens of countries and legislative changes are expected to come into effect within a year. The first regulated promessions may be seen before the end of 2011.
