Permanent magnets and electro-magnets are housed in ramps that are located between the rails and produce the corresponding sound in the cabin as part of the AWS system. When the unit passes the magnet, the bell and/or horn are sounded in the cabin (or a visual representation is shown) to provide an indication of the aspect (such as a caution or stop signal).
