Resonance energy transfer

A phenomenon in which one fluorophore excites another when there is significant overlap of the emission spectrum of the primary fluorophore with the excitation spectrum of the secondary fluorophore and some other conditions are met. In part it depends strongly upon the distance that separates the fluorophores and their orientation toward one-another; it is useful in calculation of intermolecular distances of macromolecules.
