Root cap region

The apex of the root, or root cap, is a thimble-shaped mass of average sized cells which protect the meristematic cells which develop just back of it. If any of these root caps are broken off as they are pushed through the soil mass, they are replaced by some of the meristematic cells back of them. They serve as a protection for the cells of the meristematic region.
