Solar prominence

A solar prominence is a large, bright feature, usually an eruption, extending outward from the Sun's surface. The precise cause of solar prominences is currently unknown. Prominences are anchored to the Sun's surface in the photosphere, and extend outwards into the Sun's hot outer atmosphere or the corona. A typical prominence usually forms in about a day, and can last in the corona for several months, looping hundreds of thousands of miles into space.
