Syndicalism

A form of socialism that aimed to combine public ownership of the means of production with the elimination of central government. This was to be accomplished through the labour movement, which would overthrow the government; labour unions would then become the fundamental element in the new society. Syndicalism originated in Europe during the 1890s, and had some influence up to World War I; the movement petered out in the 1920s.
