A minor mannerism — verbal, visual or otherwise — which is uniquely assigned to a particular character as a means of identifying him. One character twirls his hair; another ends many of his sentences by saying "right?" Used properly, they help the reader distinguish among characters in the early going and can, by the finish, be sufficient to identify a character even without further attribution.
