Item No. 22 of the periodic system; The atomic weight of 47. 90; melting point of approximately 3270 in degrees f; boil over 5430 (degrees) f; specific weight of 4. 5. bright white metal very malleable and ductile when extremely clean. Its main functions as an alloy in the manufacture of steel. (1) correction of inert carbon particles () decreases the hardness of martensite and hardnability in secondary steel. (b) prevents the formation of austenite in high chromium steels. (c) prevents localized depletion during the long heat of chromium in stainless steel. Now finds application in its own right, due to its high strength and good corrosion resistance.
