A refinement of the N-end rule; the determination of the rate of degradation of a cellular multimeric protein composed of different kinds of subunits by amino acid residues of a subunit other than the one that is rapidly degraded. cis-Recognition is the targeting by residues of the subunit that is rapidly degraded. The distinction implicitly acknowledges that such subunits may be degraded at different rates.
