The western grip has the hand with the wrist almost horizontal with the grip of the racket so that the fingers are coming up and wrapping high around the grip. The forefinger is high up on the racket grip and the thumb behind and above it. This grip is used to hit ground strokes so that the ball can be lofted over the net.
