White space

The designation for the unprinted area of a printed piece or graphical display, regardless of stock or coat color; being the necessary background for contrast with the foreground text or images, but also used stylistically. Term includes marginal allocations and sectional divisions (v: column rule), as white space should constitute at least half of the area of a published page in a book, and at least a third of the area of a published page in a magazine that's not wholly pictorial or advertising. Compare grey space, black space; see air, apron, gutter, river, hourglass, trapped white space, attic, sinkage.
