Yutyrannus huali

A species of giant feathered dinosaurs discovered in northeastern China in March 2012. The name "yutyrannus huali" is coined by combining the Latin and Mandarin words meaning "beautiful feathered tyrant." A distant relative of tyrannosaurus rex, the yutyrannus huali is the largest known feathered animal, measuring at least 30 feet long and weighing 1½ tonnes or 40 times the weight of beipiaosaurus which is the largest previously known feathered dinosaur.

According to researchers, the yutyrannus huali's feathers were simple filaments, more like the fuzzy down of a modern baby chick than the stiff plumes of an adult bird. Combined with the animal's huge size, such insubstantial feathers would have made the dinosaur's flight impossible.
