Genetic engineering

The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

Contributors in Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering

Haptoglobin

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A serum protein, alpha globulin, that interacts with haemoglobin during recycling of the iron molecule of haemoglobin.

Vir genes

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A set of genes on a Ti plasmid that prepare the T-DNA segment for transfer into a plant cell.

Chromosome walking

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A technique that identifies overlapping cloned DNA fragments that form one continuous segment of a chromosome. These fragments can be generated either by random shearing or by partial digestion with ...

Autoradiography

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A technique that captures the image formed in a photographic emulsion as a result of the emission of either light or radioactivity from a labelled component that is placed next to unexposed film. The ...

Western blot

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A technique in which protein is transferred from an electrophoretic gel to a cellulose or nylon support membrane following electrophoresis. A particular protein molecule can then be identified by ...

Callus culture

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A technique of tissue culture; it is usually on solidified medium and initiated by inoculation of small explants or sections from established organ or other cultures (the inocula). Callus culture is ...

Chromosome jumping

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A technique that allows two segments of duplex DNA that are separated by thousands of base pairs (about 200 kb) to be cloned together. After sub-cloning, each segment can be used as a probe to ...
