Peninsula

An area of land that projects into a body of water. Three sides of peninsula are bordered by water.

A large area of flat or rolling grassland. The prairies of North America extend from the Great Lakes to the Rockey Mountains.

North Pole

The most northern point of the Earth. The North Pole is the northern end of the axis on which the Earth rotates.

Strait

A narrow passage of water that joins two larger bodies of water. The strait of Gibraltar connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean.

Stratum

A layer of rock or other material. A rock stratum looks different from the rock strata above and below it.

Natural resource

Earth science; Geology

Any part of the Earth or its atmosphere that is necessary or useful to humans. Forests, mineral deposits, and fresh water are natural resources.

Oasis

Earth science; Geology

An area in a desert where there is enough water for plants to grow. An oasis forms when groundwater lies close enough to be reached by wells.
