Human evolution

Homeodomain

Archaeology; Human evolution

The 60-amino-acid part of proteins that corresponds to the homeobox sequence of genes. All homeodomain-containing proteins appear to be located in the nucleus.

Environmental sex determination

Archaeology; Human evolution

The process by which the environment plays a major role in determining the sex of an organism.

Cloning vector (cloning vehicle)

Archaeology; Human evolution

A double-stranded DNA molecule that is able to replicate autonomously in a host cell and with which a DNA fragment (or fragments) can be bonded to form a recombinant DNA molecule for cloning.

Crest

Archaeology; Human evolution

A ridge with a sharp edge caused by muscle pull. A simple crest is created by the unidirectional pull of a single muscle, a compound crest by the opposing pulls of two muscles.

Toothpick grooves

Archaeology; Human evolution

Elongate grooves between adjacent teeth, usually on the roots just below the crown level and marked on their facing sides.

Genetic code

Archaeology; Human evolution

The base-pair information that specifies the amino acid sequence of a polypeptide.

Translational control

Archaeology; Human evolution

The regulation of protein synthesis by ribosome synthesis among mRNAs.
