Immunology
Immunology is the study of the structuree and function of the immune system which is responsible for the protection from invading foreign macromolecules or organisms. It is a broad branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in organisms. It deals with the physiological functioning of the immune system in both healthy states and immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune deficiency, transplant rejection); the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro, in situ, and in vivo.

Immunology
Complement component 7 (C7)
Biology; Immunology
A complement component that forms a complex with C5b67 is formed when C7 binds to C5b and C6. The complex has the appearance of a stalk with a leaf type of structure.
Complement component 8 (C8)
Biology; Immunology
A complement component comprising an α and β chain that participates in the membrane attack complex (MAC).
Complement component 6 (C6)
Biology; Immunology
A complement component that participates in the membrane attack complex (MAC).
Encapsulated bacteria
Biology; Immunology
Have thick carbohydrate coats that protect them from phagocytosis. Encapsulated bacteria can cause extracellular infections and are effectively engulfed and destroyed by phagocytes only if they are ...
Elispot assay
Biology; Immunology
Is an adaptation of ELISA in which cells are placed over antibodies or antigens attached to a plastic surface. The antigen or antibody traps the cells' secreted products, which can then be detected ...
Endogenous pyrogens
Biology; Immunology
Cytokines (e.g. IL-1, TNF-α) that can induce a rise in body temperature. They are distinct form exogenous substances such as endotoxin from gram-negative bacteria that induce fever by triggering ...
Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
Biology; Immunology
An assay in which an enzyme is linked to an antibody and a coloured substrate is used to measure the activity of bound enzyme and hence the amount of bound antibody.
