Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding is the primary process for manufacturing plastic parts used in consumer goods such as computer keyboards, monitors, bottle caps, cups and solid plastic articles. Plastic is known to be a very versatile and economical material that is used in many applications. Injection molding involves taking plastic in the form of pellets or granules and heating this material until a melt is obtained. Then the melt is forced into a split-die chamber/mold where it is allowed to "cool" into the desired shape. The mold is then opened and the part is ejected, at which time the cycle is repeated.

Contributors in Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding

Corrosion resistance

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A broad term applying to the ability of plastics to resist many environments.

Masterbatch

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A concentration of a substance (an additive, pigment, filler, etc.) in a base polymer.

Gate blush

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A blemish or disturbance in the gate area of an injection moulded article.

Monomer

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A relatively simple molecular structure, usually containing carbon and of low molecular weight, which can react to form a polymer by combination with itself or with other molecules and energy.

Filler

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A relatively inert substance added to a plastic compound to reduce its cost and/or to improve physical properties, particularly hardness, stiffness and impact strength.

Vacuum forming

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A process whereby a heated plastic sheet is drawn against a mould surface by evacuating the air between it and the mold.

Insert

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A removable part of the mould imparting increased resistance to wear, heat transferability, or changeable part shape to that area of the mold.
