Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding is the primary process for manufacturing plastic parts used in consumer goods such as computer keyboards, monitors, bottle caps, cups and solid plastic articles. Plastic is known to be a very versatile and economical material that is used in many applications. Injection molding involves taking plastic in the form of pellets or granules and heating this material until a melt is obtained. Then the melt is forced into a split-die chamber/mold where it is allowed to "cool" into the desired shape. The mold is then opened and the part is ejected, at which time the cycle is repeated.

Contributors in Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding

Tie-bar spacing

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

The space between the horizontal tie-bars on an injection moulding machine. Basically, this measurement limits the size of moulds that can be placed between the tie-bars and into the moulding ...

Ash content

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

The solid residue remaining after a substance has been incinerated or heated to a temperature sufficient to drive off all combustible or volatile substances.

Finite element analysis

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

The solution of simultaneous equations for each element with resulting pressure, temperature and elapsed time at each node.

Melt strength

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

The strength of the plastic while in the molten state. This is a pertinent factor in extrusion, blow moulding and drawing of molten resin from a die.

Yield strength

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

The stress at which a material exhibits a specified limiting deviation from the proportionality of stress to strain.

Molecular weight

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

The sum of the atomic weights of all atoms in a molecule. Especially in plastics an average molecular weight is reported.

Molecule

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

The smallest unit quantity of matter which can exist by itself and retain all of the properties of the original substance.
