Seismology
Intensity
Earth science; Seismology
A measure of the effects at a particular place produced by shaking during an earthquake. (Not to be confused with magnitude.)
Median
Earth science; Seismology
The midpoint of the values after they have been arranged from the smallest to the largest (or the largest to the smallest). There will be as many values above the median as below the median.
Modified mercalli intensity scale
Earth science; Seismology
The Mercalli scale rates the intensity of shaking from an earthquake. The ratings vary from I (felt only under especially favourable circumstances) to XII (total destruction).
Maximum credible earthquake
Earth science; Seismology
The maximum earthquake that is capable of occurring in a given area or on a given fault during the current tectonic regime.
Convolution
Earth science; Seismology
The mathematical link between the input seismic signal, the transfer function, and the output signal. Usually performed in the frequency domain.
