Swimming

Swimming is a competitive and recreational water sport competed in individually or on a relay, however points can be scored for a team. Competitive swimming is seperated into several categories some in open water, others in a competition pool which can take place in a 25-yard 25-meter or 50-meter long pool. There are four competitive swimming strokes, freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly.

Olympic size pools are 50 metres long (55 yards) and 21 metres wide (23 yards). The backstroke turning lines are 5 metres (16 feet 3 inches) away from each end of the pool.

Open turn

The swimmer must touch the wall with both hands. After touching the wall the swimmer can then put their feet against the wall to push off.

Seeding

The fastest swimmers are put in the central lanes of the pool while the slowest swimmers are put in the outer ones lanes. The times come from the swimmers qualifying time.

Wedge kick

This is used in the breaststroke and it is a wide kick.

Whip kick

This is also used in the breaststroke but it is not as wide as the wedge kick.

Start

When a signal goes of, such as a horn or starting pistol to which tells the swimmers to begin the race. All races start with the swimmers out of the water except for the backstroke competition.
