Swimming

Swimming is a competitive and recreational water sport competed in individually or on a relay, however points can be scored for a team. Competitive swimming is seperated into several categories some in open water, others in a competition pool which can take place in a 25-yard 25-meter or 50-meter long pool. There are four competitive swimming strokes, freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly.

Transition

This is the time when the swimmer is underwater at the very beginning of a race or when making a turn.

Treading water

A swimmer is staying in one place in the water using their arms and legs to keep them afloat and their head above water.

Turn judge

The Turn Judge makes sure the swimmer turns correctly. He is also the Judge that holds up lap cards to inform a swimmer how many laps are left in a race. See Lap Cards.

This is a race strategy in longer races where the swimmers time in the second half of the race in less than the first half.
