Swimming

Swimming is a competitive and recreational water sport competed in individually or on a relay, however points can be scored for a team. Competitive swimming is seperated into several categories some in open water, others in a competition pool which can take place in a 25-yard 25-meter or 50-meter long pool. There are four competitive swimming strokes, freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly.

A swimmer must swim as fast as they can over a certain distance. This is usually not more than 25-30 yards.

A swimmer's halfway time in a race. This is measured every 50 meters.

Standing dive

The swimmer stands on the edge of the pool or starting blocks, their legs bent at the knees, with the upper body leaning forward over the water, arms stretched out in front of the swimmer.

Slow pool

Opposite of a fast pool. This is a pool, which will not allow a swimmer to swim fast due to bad design or old technology.

Timed final

These are when heats are timed and the top 2 or 3 finalists are determined by the fastest times.

Swimming cap

Sports; Swimming

This is a lightweight plastic or rubber cap that helps to reduces resistance when swimming. It also helps to save a swimmer's hair from the harmful effects of chlorine.
