Albuquerque
The largest city in the state of New Mexico, United States. The eastern side of the city is bordered by the Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande flows through the city from north to south.
Albuquerque was founded in 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost. The 20th century was marked by decades of urban growth. Despite the city's continued growth during the 21st century, Albuquerque still retains much of its original Spanish heritage. 46.7% of the city's population was Hispanic or Latino of any race in 2010.
Albuquerque is the 32nd-largest city in the United States. In 2007, it was nationally ranked as the 6th fastest-growing city. According to the 2010 Census, the city's population was 545,852. In 2011, its metropolitan population was estimated at 907,775.
Albuquerque is home to a number of high-tech private companies and government institutions, including the Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia National Laboratories. It was deemed the best city for business and careers by Forbes Magazine in 2006.
There are many museums, galleries and shops located in the city. Points of interest include the Albuquerque Biological Park and Old Town Albuquerque. The Sandia Mountains offer rock climbing, hiking and other outdoor activities for adventure-seeking tourists.
