Battle of Arausio

Battle of Arausio, (Oct. 6, 105 bc),was the defeat of a Roman army by Germanic tribes near Arausio southern France. It was part of the cimbrian war. This battle is regarded as the greatest defeat of Rome ever throughout its ancient history. Ranged against the migratory tribes of the Cimbri under Boiorix and the Teutoni were two Roman armies, commanded by the consul Gnaeus Mallius Maximus and proconsul Quintus Servilius Caepio. However, bitter differences between the commanders prevented the Roman armies from cooperating, with devastating results.

200000 Cimbrian and Teutonic warriors were engaged by approximately 80000 Roman soldiers plus another 40000 auxiliary troops.

Approximately 15,000 Cimbers were killed, while Roman losses are described as being up to 80,000 troops, as well as another 40,000 auxiliary troops (allies), servants and camp followers.
