Colorado, nicknamed "The Centennial State" is a U.S. state that covers most of the Southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains. It was admitted to the Union as the 38th state in 1876, the centennial year of the United States Declaration of Independence. Colorado is bordered Wyoming to the north; Nebraska and Kansas to the northeast and east; on the south by New Mexico; and Utah on the west. The capital is Denver. Other major cities include Colorado Springs, Aurora, Lakewood, Fort Collins, Thornton, Westminster, Arvada, Pueblo, and Centennial.
