Earl Weaver
Earl Sidney Weaver (August 14, 1930 – January 19, 2013) was an American professional baseball player and manager. After playing in minor baseball league, he retired without playing in Major League Baseball (MLB). He became a minor league manager, and then managed in MLB for 17 years with the Baltimore Orioles (1968–1982; 1985–1986). He was inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996.
Earl Weaver was known for being one of baseball's most loyal and colourful characters with a memorable wit. He was called a hothead among umpires as he often yelled directly into an umpire's face to argue a call or arule. He was ejected 91 times, including once in both games of a doubleheader.
Dubbed the "Earl of Baltimore," Weaver guided the Orioles to four American League pennants (1969, 1970, 1971, 1979) and the World Series title in 1970. Under Weaver, the Orioles finished with at least 100 wins in five subsequent years (1969, 1970, 1971, 1979, 1980).
Weaver died on January 19, 2013 at age 82. Weaver once made this suggestion for after his death: "On my tombstone just write, 'The sorest loser that's ever lived.' "
