Guinea is a country in West Africa. Formerly known as French Guinea (Guinée française), it is today sometimes called Guinea-Conakry to distinguish it from its neighbour Guinea-Bissau. Conakry is the capital, the seat of the national government, and the largest city.

Guinea was colonised by the French in 1890 but subsequently gained their independence in 1958.

The country contains large amounts of natural resources, such as 25% of the worlds bauxite reserves. 80% of the labour force however works in agriculture, and the chief exports are juices and tobacco. In the coming years they will begin oil production from reserves on the northwest coast of africa. Despite sitting on many natural resources, diamond, gold etc. mining is not a major industry, and this is one of the reasons why Guinea is considered one of the poorest countries in the world. Their unit of currency is the Guinean Franc.

Over 10million people live in Guinea, primarily speaking French although other African languages like Fulani are also widespread. The people are overwhelmingly Muslim although a wide range of religions are practised in the less developed areas.
