A passive microwave radiometer successor to the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) that provides greater frequency diversity, improved spatial resolution, increased swatch width, and improved antenna performance. It is used to observe atmospheric and oceanic parameters such as precipitation, soil moisture, global ice and snow cover, SST, wind speed, atmospheric cloud water, and water vapor.
