United States League of Gileadites

On January 15, 1851, in Springfield, Massachusetts, John Brown, then a wool merchant, organised the Gileadites, a band of free blacks and runaway slaves, for the purpose of defeating slave catchers in the North by violent means if necessary. Brown formed the Gileadites in response to passage of the Compromise of 1850.
