The idea (originating with MS-DOS) of a programme operating in the background while a user is doing something else in the foreground has evolved on Windows systems to a Windows Service. Examples include plug-and-play device detection, running message queues, file indexing, and task scheduling. In addition to the services the operating system instals itself, programmes such as SQL Server instal their own Windows Services to implement functionality that must be available to all users.
