The contingencies that regulate natural selection. The habitat or environment sets requirements for the survival of individuals. Members of a species who exhibit features appropriate to the contingencies survive and reproduce, and those with less appropriate characteristics have fewer offspring. Natural selection therefore occurs as particular organisms satisfy (or fail to satisfy) the contingencies of survival.
