The arms, alternating, move through the water pulling the swimmer forward. The arms go over the swimmers head and then back to their side and then are brought back over the head. The legs kick in a flutter kick, meaning they do not have to move together but also alternate, one moving up while the other moves down. The crawl is the stroke that most people use when they go swimming.
