Equine infectious anaemia

A lentivirus-induced disease of the horse family with an almost worldwide distribution. It is characterised by recurring fever, platelet reduction, weight loss, edema, and anemia. Although death can occur, there is usually an eventual cessation of clinical signs. However, host defences are unable to completely eliminate the virus, and the animal remains a persistently infected inapparent carrier.
