Event space

The mental space which encodes the time reference currently in focus in discourse. Normally the event space and the focus space coincide. However, sometimes an event space can be built with respect to a focus space and thus can diverge from it. One way in which this happens is due to perfect aspect, which signals that an earlier or later event has relevance at a later or earlier point in time respectively. In this case, the earlier/later event is built in the event space, and the event/time for which structure in the event space has relevance is contained in the focus space.
