A property associated with the utterance (an actual instance of language use).

Concerns the observation that utterances occur spontaneously and often exhibit degrees of grammatical well-formedness. Grammatical well-formedness is not a criterial property of an utterance, unlike the related construct of the sentence. For example, in terms of structure, an utterance may consist of a single word (Hi!), a phrase (No way!), an incomplete sentence (Did you put the...?), or a sentence that contains errors of pronunciation or grammar because the speaker is tired, distracted or excited, and so on.
