Gravity shunting relies on the use of a hump to give a cut the necessary momentum to reach the siding. Fly shunting, though rarely used, is an extremely practical (and dangerous...) method, whereby a single machine pushes the vehicle(s) to give them the right speed to roll towards their destination siding.
